Why Knife Making Is the Ultimate Experience Gift

Its fair to say that finding the perfect gift for someone who “doesn’t need anything” can be surprisingly difficult. Plenty of us have stood in a shop holding a pair of jazzy socks thinking “surely there’s something better than this.” What we really want is to give the people we care about a gift that they’ll actually be stoked about.

That’s exactly why in New Zealand, gift experiences are growing in popularity. Instead of another object that ends up in a drawer, experiences create memories, stories, and something meaningful to look forward to.

At Lost Arts, knife making experiences stand out because they delivers something rare: a hands-on day filled with creativity, challenge, and satisfaction… plus a handcrafted knife to take home and show off to your mates!

In this article, we’ll explore why we think knife making is the most memorable experience gifts Auckland has to offer - and why hundreds of of our previous students say it’s a must-do!

Why Experience Gifts Are Replacing Traditional Presents - The Science

Traditional gifts can be great, but their impact often fades pretty quickly. Experiences tend to work differently.

Before the day even arrives there’s anticipation, something exciting in the calendar to look forward to. During the experience you’re fully hands on, learning something new, laughing with others, and often stepping a little outside your comfort zone. Afterwards, you’ve got something to show-off and a good yarn to share!

There is real science behind this shift.

An Article published in the Oxford Journal of Consumer research consistently found that gifting experiences came out on top, when compared to material presents. Why?

  • When gifted an experience the person feels higher levels of joy and gratitude, strengthening the connection in the relationship/friendship.

  • It was found that when the experience can be shared with loved ones they are even more successful as a gift.

  • Experiences accumulate memories and photos for albums, strengthening shared history between loved ones.

A hands-on knife making experience ticks every one of those boxes and adds something extra. You leave with proof of what you achieved that you can use next time your cooking, fishing on the boat or out in the bush!

What Makes Knife Making Such a Powerful Gift Experience

It's a Hands-On Experience

One of the most common things we hear from students is how surprised they are by just how hands-on the day is. Students start their day choosing the style of knife they want and before they know it they are stuck in operating machines, seeing their design take shape in their own hands!

Of course, Bruce (Master Knife Maker) is with you every step of the way to demonstrate, answer questions and generally gas you up, but the rest is all you!

A Gift They will Keep Forever

Everyone walks out of the workshop with a sharp, ready to use knife that they designed and built themselves.

Their knives are made and finished to such a high standard they can be used everyday whether its in the kitchen or outdoors.

We use quality materials and professional techniques so theres no reason why it can’t reach heirloom status in your family, as long as you take care of it!

Pride, Achievement, and Confidence

Making a knife is undeniably cool, but we think the most underrated factor is the sheer pride people feel when they realise what they’ve made.

One of our favourite parts of teaching these courses is watching the confidence shift over the day. People arrive a bit unsure, then walk out with big grins and a spring in their step.

Even for those who are tool-savvy but never knew they had the ability to craft a knife of this standard, they walk away with the confidence to go home and pursue knife making or other hobbies.

What Happens in The Workshop

Lost Arts’ most popular experience is the one-day knife making workshop. The first question most people have is pretty simple:

“This looks amazing… but what actually happens during the day?”

The short version? You start the morning with a flat piece of carbon steel and by the end of the day you’re holding a knife you made yourself. The longer version:

Choosing your knife design - We have a range of kitchen and hunting knife templates so you can copy the one that looks the coolest!

Shaping and grinding the blade - You take you’re piece of carbon steel and grind it into shape. This is where the sparks fly making for really cool pics.

Heat treating - Your blade is heated and treated in the workshop forge and kiln to harden and then temper the steel. This heat-treating process strengthens the steel so the knife can actually hold a sharp edge.

Creating and Fitting the Handle - Students choose from a selection of beautiful timbers and shape them to fit comfortably in the hand.

Sharpening and Finishing - Bruce shows everyone how to sharpen and polish their knife so it’s ready to use. You’ll also learn how to properly care for a carbon steel knife so it lasts for years.

Taking home your knife - Yes, you go home with your knife, sharp and ready to use.

And of course, no workshop day would be complete without a good feed. Anne keeps everyone well fed with a generous lunch and afternoon tea from her country kitchen.

Not confident with Tools?

No experience is required - seriously, none.

The course is designed specifically with beginners in mind, with step-by-step guidance from Bruce throughout. Many participants have genuinely never touched tools or machines before they arrive.

Small Groups, Personal Guidance

Our courses are intentionally small - no more than six people - which allows for one-on-one teaching, ensuring no one is forgotten.

This creates a relaxed environment where questions are encouraged, mistakes are easily corrected, and we can ensure everyone gets a quality result.

Family-Owned, Passion-Driven Craftsmanship

Lost Arts is a family owned business run from our home workshop in Clevedon, Auckland.

Bruce leads the knife making courses and occasionally works alongside his son Alex, while Anne keeps everyone fuelled with an epic lunch and afternoon tea throughout the day.

You’ll also probably be greeted by Moss, the family dog, when you arrive.

Who This Experience Is Perfect For

One of the reasons knife making works so well as a gift is that it suits a wide range of people.

Husbands, Partners or Boyfriends Who Have Everything

For the man in your life that when he needs something he just goes out an buys it, gifting him this experience will have him genuinely surprised and gives him something practical to use every day.

Dads Who Deserve Something Different

Birthdays, Father’s Day, retirement, or milestone celebrations - this is the kind of gift for a Father that deserves a bit more than the usual! Plus, he can show his knife off to his mates over a beer.

Couples Looking for a Unique Experience Together

If you’re looking for a unique date idea (or you’ve both been eyeing up the course), this is a pretty unbeatable way to spend a day together.

It’s creative, hands on, and sparks will fly. (couldn't help myself, sorry)

Women Who Want Something New and Creative

This course is designed to welcome people with any level of exposure to hand crafting, tools and workshops. So, if you’ve ever thought “that looks amazing… but I could never do that”, you’re exactly who this experience is for.

Families and Multi-Generational Groups

Parents with adult kids, fathers and daughters, siblings and in-laws… If you are looking for a way to get the family together and build some memories, bring everyone along and get stuck in!

Ready to Give a Gift They’ll Never Forget?

Knife making hits the present sweet spot so perfectly theres no way it wont earn you the ‘Best Gift Giver’ crown in the family.

It’s hands-on, a little bit challenging (in a good way), incredibly satisfying, and they walk away with something real. Not just a memory, but a tool they’ll use for years - whether that’s chopping onions for dinner or heading out on their next hunting trip. Every time they pick it up, they’ll be reminded of the day they made it and who gifted it to them.

So whether you’re planning ahead for a birthday, Father’s Day, Christmas, or you’ve left things slightly last minute (no judgement here), booking the experience or grabbing a gift voucher is an easy win.

Because lets be real… socks just can’t compete with epic memories and a knife you made yourself.
